Dumfries Show is held at Park Farm, Dumfries, on the first Saturday in August, and claims to be the country's biggest single-day show. It dates from 1962, when the Dumfries and Lockerbie shows joined forces. Livestock is the core of the day: dairy and beef cattle, sheep, and a goat section with milking trials, alongside a horse section that keeps on growing and BSJA showjumping. Away from the rings there are baking, home and garden classes, a walking-stick section, a Young Farmers section and a food festival with live cookery. Look out for the cheese competition too: outside the Highland Show, there is no other like it in Scotland.
