Water Lane Walled Garden stands outside Hawkhurst, on the Kent and East Sussex border, and holds its Christmas market over a weekend that begins with a Friday night market. The garden, which was at its most productive in the Edwardian era, still has its original glasshouses, and its cutting garden holds more than 70 beds, across an acre and three quarters. More than 50 hand-picked stalls offer gifts from near and far, while food market stalls line the upper terrace, with hot food, a tartiflette bar, warm mince pies and coffee. Hot drinks and fire pits help keep out the cold. Under-16s come in free, and dogs are welcome too, on a lead and on their best behaviour.
