Tewkesbury Christmas Market and Lights Switch-On
Once a year the centre of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, is handed over to Christmas. Run by volunteers, not for profit, with the town council, the Christmas market and lights switch-on is, its organisers say, the biggest thing the community puts on all year. The High Street, Barton Street and Church Street close to traffic, and more than 70 stalls line the centre of each street, selling Christmas gifts, handmade crafts and street food. Children have fairground rides and Father Christmas to meet, while local musicians and dancers fill the stage free of charge. At 5pm the crowd gathers at The Cross, where the cast of the Roses Theatre pantomime switch on the lights and everyone is invited to sing. Five town car parks offer free parking, and the M5 is five minutes away.
