St Peter's Christmas Market in Marlborough
The first church at the western end of the High Street in Marlborough, Wiltshire, was finished by 1100, and St Peter's still has a stone-vaulted chancel, an uncommon feature for a church of its size. Now looked after by a charitable trust as a community centre, it is given over to handmade and independent work for the St Peter's Christmas Market on two winter days. Makers, artists and crafters from the area set out stalls of handmade pieces, one-of-a-kind gifts and goods made locally, and you can talk to the people behind them as you browse. The first market falls on the day Marlborough switches on its Christmas lights; the second follows in mid-December. Both run from 1pm to 8pm, with a level path to the door, and buying from the stalls supports small businesses around the town.
