Rusland Show
In 1871 six farmers and gardeners in Cumbria's Rusland Valley staged a small flower show and plant sale in Rusland's Old School. It caught on at once, and the Rusland Show, still run by its local community, now fills Whitestock Meadow in the Lake District National Park. In the marquees, growers, cooks, crafters, photographers and film-makers compete for some thirty trophies. Out on the sports field, fell runners take routes over private land that are open only on show day, hound trails go back to the years after the First World War, and teams take each other on at tug of war and egg throwing. Children have a pet show and fancy dress, dogs line up for the waggiest tail, and the craft and local interest tents and the beer tents fill out the day.
