Keswick Show
Keswick Show is one of the oldest agricultural shows in Cumbria, staged every August Bank Holiday Monday by a society founded in 1860. Set on Pump Field at Braithwaite, just outside Keswick, it is very much a "town meets country" day in the heart of a busy Lake District tourist area. The show spreads across three fields: the main ring, sheep area, dog showing ring, 60-plus trade stands and vintage display in one; further rings and the industrial, art and craft marquees in another; and the Cumbrian Championship Sheepdog Trials — where spectators can watch real-life "One Man and His Dog" — in the third. The agricultural classes are dominated by sheep, with the traditional Lakeland breeds of Herdwick and Swaledale alongside rare breeds, plus horses, ponies, gun dogs, terriers and foxhounds. The afternoon brings Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling with a championship class, the Barrow Fell Race from the main ring at 2pm, sheep clipping, the hilarious terrier racing, novelty dog and pet classes and a horse and pony fancy dress parade, all to a soundtrack from the Cockermouth Mechanics Brass Band.
