Kentmere Sheep Show
Lake District tradition lives on at Kentmere Sheep Show, held in the Cumbrian village of Kentmere on the show field at Millriggs Farm. A photograph of prizes being presented goes back to 1945, and every August Bank Holiday Sunday sheep are still judged breed by breed, from Rough Fell, Swaledale and Herdwick to Mules, Bluefaced Leicesters and rare breeds. Young handlers from under-eights to eighteen compete too, marked on their own skill rather than their sheep's. While parents show, primary-age children have easy-going sports, and a relaxed fun dog show has classes for the most handsome dog, the prettiest bitch and the best veteran. Dogs on a lead are welcome on the field, which sits in a valley the show counts among the Lake District's most beautiful.
